My WordPress/Mobile class

I completed a WordPress website! The pages are separated for each area. Plugins were used to create features including menus and galleries. The media library is so convenient to store your images and videos. Adding CSS classes allowed me to customize the website. I officially have WordPress experience! YAY!

Company logo

I created my own restaurant company logo using Adobe software. This is all new to me. I have a developer background but I am learning about web design now! It is very fun. There is so many talented students in my class. It is just amazing. I hope they get to use their skills after graduating.

Website prototype!

Later we created an interactive prototype of the same website in Adobe XD. Figuring out how to digitize images on my own allowed me to use pictures more effectively. It was very important to learn about copyright laws about using images on websites. I took a lot of picture myself 🙂

Learning is fun especially if you have a great teacher like Amanda. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise Amanda. I really wish we had more onsite in class time. But that was impossible with the pandemic. Yet we managed to learn new skills!

Is it possible to find a job search app with more intelligence?

I would love an app that allows more specific categories for searching for jobs.

Tons on emails to sort through!

We need a software program that can filter out the jobs that you are not qualified for! It is crazy to go through email after email looking for a specific type of job with that requires a certain background.

For me I am searching for an entry level position which nowadays means 2 or 3 years experience. Not sure how you can acquire that experience… So a way to filter out positions that require more experience. It needs to exclude certain skills that I don’t want to pursue at this time.

Let’s find a job!

Let’s look for a local web developer position. When I search I get these alternate job titles. Should I search using some of these titles?

Similar job titles?

Following is common selections to filter the search. But it is not specific enough. It would be so great to be able to filter by skills. This would save so much time and frustration. Let’s add some specific skills like software languages, databases, and other technical skills. These skills need to be included or excluded from the search!

Search Categories

So many email are sent to me like these below… They are nowhere near what job I am seeking. Please check out the skills of a person before you send these email….

Another problem with job searching is the companies description. I believe a lot of times they have more of a wish list of skills instead of realistic exceptions. Companies really need to spend thought and time on the job requirements. I have been involved in the hiring process and know the time restrictions when you are so busy. It can be so hard to find the time but the results will be better for everyone in the process.

Oh well there is always tomorrow… Stay well my friends 😛

Twitter is informative and fun!

I love using twitter to catch up with current events, fun posts, and to follow the current software trends!

Who reads twitter?

All teen and adults can enjoy their twitter accounts. You can follow your likes, interests, and current events.

Check your notifications first!

Every day twitter is different! A lot of variety in posts including the current events.

This is a tweet of a congressional member! I love seeing inside their chamber!

Fun posts about animals and children dancing!

Cities reopening from the pandemic!

Technology posts to keep us informed!

Twitter removes posts they call “misinformation”

Free speech is threatened when social platforms remove posts they consider misinformation — meaning it does not agree with their agenda. This is my major dislike of social media platforms!!

Have fun on the twitter feed when you have time! I know I will!

Being constantly connected. Is it good? Is it bad?

Being constantly connected can be very distracting. I used to be interrupted all the time at work by internal/external emails and phone calls. If we tried to work uninterrupted we got reprimanded. So you just try to keep up as best you can.

Connected!

It is always great to catch up with other on Facebook especially now that we are in stay home orders. How are others coping? How are parents managing with home schooling and no personal timeout. There are entertaining stories on there to read and share! Sometimes we have informational stories we like to share. Most of my contacts are animal lovers so we all share our pics!

Twitter I browse for current events and learning more about the current software/design trends.

Business Opportunities

Gotta checkin to LinkedIn to keep up with your business connections. Who has changed jobs? Who is looking for a job? Also it is a great place to look for a position which I do periodically.

You are not alone!

I am really trying to limit my time on some of these platforms. We all need to unplug to check our list of goals. But during the current pandemic causing isolation, it is difficult to not go to the social media. Social media plays an important role to remind us that we are not alone. Not everyone agrees with our opinions but we still value them.

Reflect on a time that technology got you in trouble.

The mobile phone technology has had great advancements. You can communicate via social media, texts, or email. I can really get lost in time when I am surfing the net on my phone. I was doing much better cutting down my screen time until the pandemic happens. The last week or so I find me wanting to connect somehow with others. It there still people out there? LOL

I also sit through the coronavirus press briefings on TV. Sometimes it runs for hours… Everyday hoping that people will stop getting so sick and we can visit our friends and family. I need to be more productive with my time. It is hard with not much of a regular schedule. Luckily I am taking two college classes to keep me learning. My dogs and birds help me get up every day to take care of them. So let us all wait this out. It will all get better soon! Stay well!

What did you like / dislike about WordPress?

WordPress can be very convenient and low cost way for posting a blog or a business web site. It is easy to bring online and has security included.

The pictures below are from my restaurant website project. I picked a theme that had eCommerce included, restaurant features, not one that other students picked in my class, and allowed CSS modifications.

Snack HangouT Restaurant Project

Nice features

  • media library – easy to access and store your images with its attribution
  • plugins for galleries, contact forms or restaurant menus
  • block options like lists, accordions, images
  • easy blogging

Difficulties

  • Limited style options in the header. Difficult to insert large logo on the left or right side of the website name.
  • Could not easily put picture on the side of an image.
  • Had to use CSS to format
  • Hard to reproduce a complicated design

Various WordPress screens from my project are shown below. I used CSS for formatting many of the headers font size and color, font family style and line-height of paragraphs (due to squished text). The WordPress header formatting was used but was difficult to get the logo and Site Title positioned nicely. I would of liked a smaller header section with the logo on the left of the Site Title.

Setting up the Header Section

Using CSS to format

Set up Category Colors

Overall WordPress enabled me to create a website using my content and images. I did opt to use CSS to improve readability. In conclusion, I would recommend WordPress for creation of a maximum of four page website.

Nosedive episode of Black Mirror from Netflix

Social Interaction Rating System

The Nosedive episode of Black Mirror is about social media going wrong. As we see people faces, their rating of 0 to 5 is displayed next to them. So people tend to decide if they want to interact with others on basic of their rating.

Social media increasingly dictates social stature.

Social media increasingly dictates social stature. Your stature on today’s social media is implied by your number of followers. Others think your opinion is more valuable if you have a large number of followers. In Lacey’s case her social statute was indicated her rating number. She was a decent 4.2 but desired a 4.5+.

What is it about social media that gives it so much power over us?

Today there can be social pressure through social media, just like in high school. I am connected in social media with some successful popular people. All the vacations and fun times with friends can bother you if you let it. I do know some of these people worked very hard to have that lifestyle. So I am happy for them. There will always be social pressure to be like others. You want to fit in even if your square going into a big round hole.

Lacie practices her happy interaction

In Lacie’s reality is strongly discourage to be rude or pushy to others. You will be denied service, purchase, or even a living space. Other people point their phone at people and rate them.

Even when jogging, people point their phones to rate other people. Any interaction can be rated. When trying to rent a car the attendant gave her only 2 stars out of 5 stars. He said it was not a meaningful interaction. That is just crazy talk.

Lacie has a plan

Lacie has a 4.2 rating but she wants 4.5 or more so she can move into an exclusive apartment complex. Her old childhood friend asks her to be her maid of honor for her upcoming wedding. Unfortunately, Lacey has a lot of bad interactions on the way to get there. A lady truck driver offered Lacey a ride. The driver with a 1.2 rating told Lacie she used to be like her. Since the drivers husband died because he lost his cancer treatment option due to the rating system, she has abandoned this society’s norm. The driver said she is much happier and can be honest with others.

Did Lacie get what she wanted at the beginning of the episode?

When Lacey finally makes it to the wedding she is intoxicated, tired, and fed up. She tries to give her speech but the groom has her escorted out. She is arrested where she happily insults a fellow inmate. They are very happy to scream at each other. Something not allowed in society. I believe Lacie got to experience being honest with others. So now she can decide which direction her life will go next. Fake emotions, honesty or possibly some middle ground.

Be kind to others

I believe China is testing a similar rating system. This is very intrusive. Everyone has bad moods or bad days. Those times should not be held against them. That is like a snowball rolling downhill. It will escalate into a bad situation for the person. Please don’t be judgemental against someone for a single interaction. You have not been in their shoes. Kindness is free. Lets spread it around!

Blog: Reflect on a time that technology saved the day for you.

With the current virus pandemic, the internet allows us to work and take classes! I am grateful that I can complete my classes remotely. But I miss seeing my teachers and the other students at the school.

During class can see our teacher’s screen and hear them. Sometimes we see each other on the screen for questions at the end of class. Nice to see their faces!

Our class assignments are put online. After completing them, we submit them online. Technology can be so helpful!

Check out my WordPress restaurant project I am very proud of!

My teachers Amanda and Jennie!

P.S. Just got some sad news. A local vet has passed away from coronavirus. I have tears in my eyes. So senseless. A big loss for our community and his family.

Rest in peace dear man

How has the internet changed the way you work?

Stay well!

Best to everyone, working or stay at home during this pandemic! Many many people are working/studying from home. That is convenient but there are more distractions like

Children (my little cousins!)

My little cousins always so happy!

Immediate family

My brother working at home!

Our furry, feathery family

So discipline comes into play! Oh my puppy is so cute! She wants to play!

So hats off!

Have a great day! Enjoy your distractions before you have to go back to the fasted paced lifestyle! Time to walk the dogs!

P.S. Do any of you have an urge to bake since we are stuck inside?

My blueberry snack cake!

How has the internet changed the way you keep in touch?

Facebook and Twitter are the social media I use to keep in touch with my family and friends. Its great to see whats happening for others. Most of my friends and family are dog lovers!

https://therightspotpetmassage.com/

This is my friend Katie who massages dog. She has been in Alaska massaging some of the dog that are running the Iditarod! Check out her site https://therightspotpetmassage.com !

My cousins and my aunt are also on Facebook. I get to see some of their get togethers pictures.

My Aunt and cousins!

Above is my Aunt Betty and her 2 daughters (my cousins). She is the last of that generation in my family. We are glad to have her!

When I have time I check out my Facebook friends. My twitter connections are mostly from my software background. It is a great way to keep up-to-date on the latest technology and meetups.

I do email my friends and family with some articles or information I want to share. Or to arrange a lunch or dinner. I still have a friend with a flip phone. He doesn’t wanna text. LOL

So just keep in touch no matter the media. It’s important!
